Top American John Isner faced a familiar face at the US Open on Saturday evening, and suffered a similar fate: the 13th seed was upset for the third year in a row in the third round by Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(4).

Kohlschreiber, the 22nd seed, withstood 42 aces struck by his opponent seeded 13th, and conceded the only break of the match in the second set. The German's victory marked the first time the 6'10" Isner had lost three tie-breaks in one match.

"Normally you get a little bit stressed when it comes to a tie-break and you know there are not many chances, " said Kohlschreiber. "I mixed it up pretty well with the serve. I didn't go for an ace. I always tried to get a good position in the rally."

In the fourth round, Kohlschreiber will face top seed Novak Djokovic, a straight-sets winner over unseeded American Sam Querrey. The Augsburg native has bowed out at this stage in the past two years, in 2012 to Janko Tipsarevic and last year to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Isner, No. 15 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, entered the final major of the season with a title at the BB&T Atlanta Open, which contributed to his second-place finish in the Emirates AIrline US Open Series Bonus Challenge. In Flushing Meadows this week, he did not drop serve, including today's loss to Kohlschrieber.

"If you told me going into the match that I'm not going to lose my serve, you'd think I would have won the match. It's very disappointing. It's a real tough one for me, " said Isner. "I did some things well out there, but I did a lot of things not well at all. [Kohlschreiber] played better in the big points.
