Retro tennis shoes
We didn't cringe, however, when Fila announced it was bringing back two of its iconic sneakers from the early nineties: the FX-100 SL and the Cage. That's because each shoe is retro enough to be noticed but not gimmicky enough to be laughed at. And it helps that Fila updated each shoe for 2012.
The original Cage, which debuted in 1993, had a rubber "cage" on the back heel that gave it a durable look-seemingly ready for the toughest streetball game. Thankfully, the shoe has been updated with comfortable nylon-wrapped memory foam, better suited for the mean streets of your local farmers' market ($80).
If you're looking to go even more retro than the Cage, you can strap on the updated FX-100 SL ($75), a shoe that made its debut in 1992. Sure, a Velcro strap might seem over-the-top, but the muted color scheme and full-grain tumbled leather keep it looking contemporary.
Our new favorite release from Fila wasn't actually released in the nineties, but it certainly draws its inspiration from that decade. It's called the Displace ($60), and it features a strap across the front, just like the FX-100 SL. In addition, there's a sleek, space-age exterior that wouldn't look out of place in a Missy Elliot video.• • •
