Mesa High School Tennis courts
Rain has caused havoc with the state tennis tournament in all classes at the Mitchell Tennis Center and Omar Smith Instructional Tennis Courts at Texas A&M University.
Finals were expected to be held Wednesday, but rain Tuesday and Wednesday forced play to extend to today, but only in doubles.
In Class 6A boys singles, Coronado's Nathan Brown reached the finals with a 6-4, 6-3 win vs. Colin Markes of Round Rock Westwood. Brown will take on Charles Tan of Austin Westlake. Tan defeated Dillon Pineda of Allen, 7-5, 6-1 in the other semifinal.
It was announced Wednesday night by the University Interscholastic League that singles finals matches will be played at a time and location determined by the two schools.
Brown is making his third appearance at the state tournament. He was a runner-up last year.
In 6A boys doubles, Coronado's Wilson Lambeth and Cameron Bilsbarrow beat Austin Moninger and Josh Van Winkle of New Braunfels, 6-2, 6-3 in a late match Tuesday night.
Wednesday, they took on Jordan Pitts and Nick Ruzicka of Austin Lake Travis in the semifinals and were tied at 6-6 in the first set before play was called because of rain.
Doubles semis will begin at 7:30 a.m. today with finals matches to follow.
In 6A girls singles, Coronado's Margorie Antohi beat Elizabeth Tedford of Dallas Highland Park, 6-0, 6-4 on Tuesday night, then lost to Marlee Zein of Fort Bend Dulles, 6-1, 7-5 in Wednesday's semifinals.
In 3A singles, Tornillo's Annette Posada lost 6-0, 6-0 to Hana Folse of Brock and in the Class 2A mixed doubles, T.R. Kerr and Kate Smith of Mason beat Mercedes Trevino and Ernesto Sanchez of Fort Hancock, 6-0, 6-1.
